SPAIN – Sanifruit, an innovative biotechnology company dedicated to the development of natural chem-free post-harvest treatments for fruits, has launched a chemical-free solution for apples and pears to cut fruit losses.
The application of the treatment offers multiple benefits for the plants such as the reduction of fruit losses after the periods of conservation and transport or the reduction of scalding and internal browning.
A freshly cut apple eventually turns brown after being exposed to air because its cells contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase. When this comes in contact with oxygen present in the environment, it turns the phenolic compounds present in the apple tissues into brown-colored products, imparting a brownish tinge to the freshly cut apple.
“For several years we have been testing a chem-free postharvest solution that would allow the packing houses to improve the yield of their fruit. We can finally say that we have achieved it, which we are enormously proud of,” said the company.
All this is achieved by maintaining the original organoleptic characteristics of the fruit and extending its shelf life, which leads to an increase in profitability for the packing houses, allowing them to access restrictive markets with maximum residue limits (MRLs).
The new solutions can be used both in drencher or flooder and in the packing line, and their application provides multiple benefits. SANI-PF and SANI-PF L favor the reduction of fruit losses, with the consequent increase in profitability.
On the other hand, SANI-AS and SANI-AS L act against scalding and browning, obtaining fruit with a catching-eye appearance and maintaining all its natural organoleptic characteristics.
More innovations to be unleashed
Sanifruit assists their customers to apply the treatment by implementing a nebulizing system that easily adapts to the packing line.
According to Sanifruit, the solution had achieved excellent results in trials conducted in different countries with different weather conditions over the past two years. It said the application process can be easily integrated into the packing line.
For more than 35 years, the organization has been committed to innovation and sustainability and this year will be full of novelties, said the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Javier Biel.
“2022 will be a very interesting year for the fresh produce sector and exciting for the company, since we will be able to make available to more and more packing houses, chem-free treatments for their fruits and vegetables,” revealed Javier.
He noted that since the beginning of their journey, providing effective chem-free treatments has been their goal, hence was enthused to see how step by step these goals and challenges are being met.
“We start the year with the launch of our pome fruit solution, but there are still many new features to be announced that we are proud of and that our innovation department has been working on,” he said.
