EUROPE- Eppen Biotech’s L-arginine is one of the feed additives that received marketing approvals from the European Union this month after a deliberation that began last year.

The European Commission requested a scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) about the safety and efficacy of L-arginine.

This feed additive is intended to be used in feed and water for drinking for all animal species and categories and is produced by fermentation using a non‐genetically modified strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum CGMCC 20516.

The EFSA concluded that l-Arginine produced using C. glutamicum CGMCC 20516 is safe for the target species when supplemented in appropriate amounts to the diet according to the nutritional needs of the target species.

Additionally, using l-arginine produced using C. glutamicum CGMCC 20516 in animal nutrition is considered safe for consumers and the environment.

The EFSA also concluded that the additive is considered an efficacious source of the essential amino acid l‐arginine for non‐ruminant species.

Moreover, for the supplemental l‐arginine to be as effective in ruminants as in non‐ruminant species, it requires protection against degradation in the rumen.

Two enzymes also gain EU approval

The EU also approved the marketing of Kemin’s endo‐1,4‐β‐xylanase in the EU after a safety analysis conducted by the EFSA.

This enzyme is produced from Komagataella phaffii ATCC PTA-127053, produced by DSM and also approved by the EU for use by laying poultry.

Additionally, xylanase produced by Bioresource International (BRI) was also approved for use by all poultry species in the EU. This enzyme is produced by Komagataella phaffii DSM 33574.
