KENYA – Malbros Group, trading as Mjengo Limited, has announced that its operations have been certified by Bureau Veritas, receiving the Food Safety System Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000).

Bureau Veritas is a company specialized in the testing, inspection and certification founded in 1828. It operates in a variety of sectors, including Building & Infrastructure, Agri-food & Commodities, Marine & Offshore, Industry, Certification and Consumer Products.

The FSSC 22000 certification meets the Global Food Safety Initiative’s (GFSI) specification, by providing an audit of the Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) to certify the highest food safety standards in the world.

In a linkedIn posts, the Kenyan diversified food processor with a focus on the grains, biscuits and snack products, highlighted that it achieved this significant Milestone on the 18th of February 2021.

In adopting FSSC 22000’s stringent requirements, Mjengo has implemented the most robust food safety management system for manufacture of bakery products (biscuits, cakes, wafers), corn puffs, processing, packaging and dispatch of dry grains, spaghetti, pasta and condiments.

The announcement comes days after DPL Festive Bread, one of the leading bakeries in Kenya producing the market dominant Festive brand, revealed it had received the FSSC 22000 certification from SGS Kenya.

Malbrose has also been undertaking technology advancements of its facilities, with the company recently automating its operations with the implementation of SAP system.

The new system will manage and organise the businesses critical functions across sales, distribution, administration, customer service and financials, all in one, single integrated system.

It was provided by ACEteK Software, an Information Technology company, and is aimed to enable the producer of Daawat, NuVita, Rico and Snak It brands, to better serve its customers and suppliers.

Food safety and technology advancement in the food industry are linked, directly or indirectly, to the achievement of many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those pertaining to ending hunger and poverty, and promoting good health and well-being.

The newly ratified African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), that went into force as of 1 January 2021, is expected to boost intraregional trade of agrifood products by almost 70% among 54 countries to create the largest free trading block in the world.

This presents an enormous opportunity for Africa’s development. As part of this agreement, countries must work to harmonize their sanitary and phytosanitary regulations in line with international science-based standards.

These harmonized standards will enhance trade opportunities both regionally and with countries internationally.
