UGANDA – The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has extended its agreement with Intertek, a leading provider of Total Quality Assurance to industries around the world, to continue managing its Pre-Export Verification of Conformity to Standards Programme (PVoC) for exports to the nation.

The program checks the compliance of all regulated goods in each exporting country across a number of industries, including food and chemicals.

This guarantees that they adhere to the relevant technical regulations and quality standards for Uganda, giving Uganda’s citizens confidence in the dependability and quality of imported goods.

The program has received funding from Intertek ever since it began in 2012.

“We are delighted to continue to work with UNBS in supporting them with the ongoing success of the PVoC, giving Uganda’s consumers the assurance they need when buying imported goods and protecting them from sub-standard products.

“Having introduced the very first Conformity Assessment Programme in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia more than 25 years ago, Intertek has the experience and expertise to provide UNBS, and exporters to Uganda, with a rapid and excellent service,” Jeremy Gaspard, Global Business Line Leader, Government and Trade Services, Intertek said.

Exporters to Uganda are required to provide a Certificate of Conformity for Customs clearance in accordance with Government regulations. This can only be provided by an authorized inspection body like Intertek.

UNBS outlined four paths that traders can take to clear products before they are delivered to the Ugandan market in January, as part of its PVoC initiative. The routes were named Route A, Route B, Route C, and Route D.

Route A is applicable to any type of commodities and any trader/ exporter, and no prior registration is required.

Route B, which is dependent on the supplier’s capacity to consistently achieve the quality requirements, is advised for regular exporters of homogeneous commodities.

Route C is the one that is open for manufacturers in the country of supply that directly supply Ugandan importers. It involves consistent shipment compliance, evaluation of test reports, and additional testing to demonstrate full compliance with the Uganda Standards.

By taking advantage of the synergies of working with a single provider for all of their certification requirements, Intertek provides exporters to East Africa with an even better service. Intertek is also accredited for the Tanzania PVoCs.

With more than 1,000 laboratories, offices, and 44,000 employees spread across more than 100 countries, Intertek is the industry leader in PVoC programs, having introduced the first one more than 25 years ago.

It provides cutting-edge and customized Assurance, Testing, Inspection, and Certification solutions for its customers’ operations and supply chains.
